The City of Fremantle is investing in signage, encouraging business owners to prepare their shops and releasing advertising to cater for the increase in tourists expected to visit the iconic port city.Council spokesperson Wendy O’Shaughnessy, is confident that European tourists will be drawn to Fremantle by both its “bucket list” items, charm and atmosphere. “We will be increasing our activities once they get to Perth to make sure they’re aware of Fremantle,” Ms O’Shaughnessy said. The City of Fremantle hopes more international tourists will see Western Australia as a starting point on their Australian adventures and will work to entice them to Fremantle. More advertising material has been made available at the Perth International Airport and the port city has been improving the signage to make it easier for travellers to navigate to navigate their way around and to help evenly spread crowds throughout Fremantle. “The city allocated budget last financial year and this financial year, and secured some funding from Tourism Western Australia to appoint a consultant to design our wayfinding system,” Ms O’Shaughnessy said. Fremantle Trams director, Jon Tomkins says that an increase in tourists may start out slowly but he is looking forward to watching numbers grow as Western Australia increases in popularity as a tourist destination. “These direct flights will definitely be a positive for our tourism industry,” Mr Tomkins said. Direct non-stop flights between London and Perth went on sale last week through Qantas and will start operating in March 2018. “We’re really looking forward to the direct flight,” Ms O’Shaughnessy said.
